If there was a worldwide retraction in investment in 2008 because of the global crisis, as far as Petrobras was concerned, there was record investment in Brazil and abroad. The company invested R$ 53.4 billion in total, an amount which, in addition to being the largest yet invested by the company, represented an increase of 18% compared to the value invested in 2007. The largest amount of the investment was directed toward the Exploration and Production area, in which R$ 26.196 billion was applied, principally in the development of the Brazilian oil and natural gas production capacity. The Supply area received R$ 11.999 billion, used to improve the quality of Petrobras fuels and to increase the processing of heavy petroleum in the company’s refineries. The Gas and Energy area received R$ 7.222 billion, destined primarily to the extension of the Petrobras gas pipeline network in order to improve the production flow.
