Until very recently, information on the Atlantic Rainforest (Mata Atlântica) was scarce and unreliable considering that it is the most threatened Brazilian biome. This situation is in the process of being changed. Thanks to the support of Petrobras and the NGOs The International Conservation Society and The Nature Conservancy, there now exists, available to researchers, public administrators, executives, and students, the most complete database on the Atlantic Rainforest and associated ecosystems accessible on the Internet, the Geoatlântica. Administered by the Bioatlantic Institute (Instituto BioAtlântica) and gathering information from more than 50 public and private sources, the database makes possible the online visualization of environmental, economic, and social data related to the biome, presented in the form of maps, which can be combined according to the interests of the user. Thus, it becomes easier to disseminate knowledge on the Atlantic Rainforest, to promote its responsible economic development, and to conserve its natural resources.
