Petrobras was considered the most ethical multinational in the “Oil and Gas” sector in terms of performance and popularity in the Covalence Ethical Ranking 2008, released in January, in Geneva, Switzerland, by Covalence S.A., a company renowned for its index and its methodology in measuring reputation in the field of ethics. The ranking included 541 multinationals with 30 in the oil and gas sector, evaluated in 18 sectors, according to 45 criteria. Among the criteria highlighted were the impact of production on the environment, the management and the discharge of garbage, ecologically innovative products, the environmental risk related to products, information provided to the consumer, international presence, employee standards adopted, sponsorship in the area of social responsibility, anti-corruption politics, and cost reduction. In the global ranking, Petrobras placed in the 38th position and was the highest rated Brazilian company. The Covalence Ethical Ranking has been published annually since 2005, and functions as a thermometer which measures how multinationals are perceived globally with respect to ethics. The information in the ranking serves as a basis for the media, research institutes, companies, and NGOs.

In 2008, Petrobras posted records in asphalt production, commercialization, and exports. During the year, the company produced 2,193,127 tons, sold 2,168,922 tons in Brazil, and exported 22,138 tons. These new figures exceeded those of 2007 by 99.9%, 27.25%, and 56%, respectively. The good results were due principally to the integrated efforts between the Supply area and the Petrobras refineries and to a new system of ordering and supplying of the product by quota, implemented based on projections made by the Brazilian distributors and the delivery capacity of each production center. The start of the marine commercialization of the Bosduc type asphalt (oil asphaltic cement diluted with aromatic extract and Light Cycle Oil, or LCO) also contributed to the success because it constitutes a good alternative for the commercialization of the product, in addition to broadening the company’s product portfolio.
